Software Engineer III, Infrastructure, Spanner SQL Language

## About the Role Google Cloud is hiring a Software Engineer III to work on Spanner, Google's globally distributed database platform. The role focuses on the Spanner SQL language, including designing and implementing new SQL data types and functions within the database kernel. This is a systems and database-engineering role requiring strong C++ programming and a solid understanding of database internals. ## Responsibilities - Design, implement, and test new SQL data types and functions within the Spanner database kernel. - Develop primarily in C++ while working with GoogleSQL and PostgreSQL dialects. - Build expertise in Spanner architecture and distributed database systems. - Contribute across the complete feature lifecycle from requirements and design through implementation, testing, and rollout. - Collaborate with query processing, client library, and Site Reliability Engineering teams. - Write reliable, maintainable, and highly testable production software. - Debug and resolve issues involving SQL types, functions, query execution, and database behavior. - Participate in design reviews, code reviews, and technical discussions. - Analyze and optimize database performance and scalability. ## Requirements - Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience. - 2+ years of professional software development experience in C++, Java, Python, or a similar language. - Strong software design and development fundamentals. - Strong C++ programming skills. - Understanding of database concepts and SQL. - Knowledge of distributed systems and large-scale software architecture. - Strong data structures and algorithms fundamentals. - Ability to design clear and maintainable APIs for scalable services. ## Nice to Have - Experience with GoogleSQL or PostgreSQL internals. - Knowledge of database engine internals such as query processing, storage engines, and transaction management. - Experience developing or maintaining large-scale distributed systems. - Experience with PostgreSQL extensions or using PostgreSQL at scale. - Experience optimizing query execution or database performance. - Knowledge of Spanner or other distributed relational databases.
